ACEA Oil Sequences Update

The new ACEA sequences include the removal of some old specifications and the introduction of new ones.

Light Duty Engine

 

Light Duty Engine Categories

The following details the latest specifications in the Light Duty Engine Category which took effect on 31st July 2023 following the most recent update by ACEA.

High SAPS

A3/B4              A5/B5              A7/B7

 

 

  • Removal of ACEA A3/B3 category (2021 update)
  • Addition of ACEA A7/B7 category (2021 update). A new category which is built on A5/B5 but with new performance tests to cater for:
    • Turbocharger deposits (diesel engines)
    • LSPI prevention (GDI engines)
    • Chain wear (GDI engines)

Low SAPS

C2       C3       C4       C5       C6       C7

Light Duty Engine Categories

  • Removal of ACEA C1 category (2021 update)
  • Addition of new ACEA C7 category

 

 

  • ACEA C7 has been introduced. It has very low HTHS requirements (2.3 – 2.6 cP) and can be thought of as the SAE 0W-16 counterpart to the ACEA C6 SAE 0W-20 category. Enhanced fuel economy being the key.

Heavy Duty Engine

The following details the latest specifications in the Heavy Duty Engine Category which took effect following the most recent update by ACEA in 2022.

Changes

  • Removal of ACEA E6 and E9 categories
  • Introduction of ACEA E8 and E11 categories

Three new performance tests have been introduced in the high SAPS sector:

  • CEC L-118-21 OM471 Piston Cleanliness (ACEA E4)
  • ASTM D6750 Caterpillar 1N Piston Cleanliness (replaces CEC L-101-09 OM501LA) (ACEA E7)
  • ASTM D6443 Chlorine (all categories)

Five key new performance tests have been introduced in the low SAPS sector:

  • CEC L-118-21 OM471 Piston Cleanliness (ACEA E8)
  • ASTM D8048 Volvo T-13 Oxidation (ACEA E8/E11)
  • ASTM D8047 Caterpillar Oil Aeration Test (ACEA E8/E11)
  • ASTM D7549 Caterpillar C13 Piston Cleanliness (replaces CEC L-101-09 OM501LA) (ACEA E11)
  • ASTM D6443 Chlorine (all categories)

You will have seen these HD upgrades on several products:

         

 

 

 

 

  • Taurus Euro FE Plus 5W-30 is also recommended where ACEA E6 or E9 specifications are required.
  • Taurus Euro Plus 10W-40 is also recommended where ACEA E6 or E9 specifications are required.
